Urban Decay Optical Illusion Complexion Primer | Review

I have tried a few drugstore primers, but have never tried more high end brands. So when I saw that Urban Decay had a travel sized primer I couldn’t resist trying it! I have had it for a few months now and I was on the fence for as I couldn’t decide how I felt about this primer.

For £14 you get 15ml of product for the travel sized version and for the normal size of this primer you get 28ml of product for £24. To put that into context the travel size is half the size of my fave No 7 Airbrush Away Primer which is £16.50 for 30 ml of product. This travel sized primer is described on UrbanDecay.co.uk as:

Instantly blur flaws and smooth out your skin with Urban Decay’s Optical Illusion Complexion Primer. This travel-size primer reduces fine lines and makes pores seem to vanish—for a gorgeous, porcelain-like texture. Makeup goes on better and lasts longer.

This velvety soft, lightweight primer has a slight pink tint to illuminate skin pre-makeup, but dries down to a translucent, matte finish. Like the name suggests, Optical Illusion creates an optical veil of scattered light, giving skin a soft-focus effect. The result? A beautiful, airbrushed finish (no Photoshop skills necessary)! UD’s cushy formula provides just enough glide to fill in lines for a smoothed-out complexion, and dries down to the perfect powdery finish. This cushiony formula contains optical blurring pigments for beautifully perfected skin. A luxurious blend of argan, rosehip and meadowfoam seed oils provides moisturizing and antioxidant benefits while vitamin E conditions.

In a clinical study of Optical Illusion Complexion Primer, immediately after use:*

• 90% of participants had a reduction in pore visibility.
• 90% had smoother-looking skin.
• 93% had more even-toned skin.
• 81% had a visible reduction in fine lines and blemishes.
*Based on clinical grading in a 30-person study.

Optical Illusion Complexion Primer comes in a luxurious travel-size clear bottle with a metallized gunmetal cap and base. UD even equipped the bottle with an airless pump—so it’s easy to get out every last bit of product.

I really like the packaging of this primer, the pump makes it super easy to get the product out, as well as to see how much is left. However, after trying this primer multiple times I’m was on the fence about this primer.

The Optical Illusion primer blends out really weirdly in my opinion. It sticks to the skin and takes a little more blending than other primers. I also find that it you apply too much it clumps together and doesn’t blend into the skin.

Above is before applying makeup and the right is after applying makeup. I do agree that this smoothes out my skin and my foundation applies well on top of it. After trying this for multiple different looks from every day to a night out, I think this is a good primer for my combination skin. It doesn’t dry my skin out, nor does it make it look any shinier.

Overall, whilst this product does have a weird consistency when blending it out, I have a love hate relationship with this primer. Would I repurchase this, I’m not sure. With so many primers out there to try I would most likely skip on picking this up for full price. Thank you so much for reading! What is your favourite primer? Until next time

This is one of my favorite primers. I have pretty large pores and this definitely blurs it. Your makeup look is gorgeous by the way!🙂

You should try the Too Faced Hangover Primer or the Smashbox Photo Finish, their expensive but worth the high end price tag. Great review x

It’s so handy! It does pump out slightly more product than I need, so I only push it half way. I feel like I’ll really be able to use all of the primer without any getting stuck like in a normal tube! Plus I’ll know when I need to grab a new one! It’s also great for travelling too!xx
