On my hunt to try new foundations this year I picked up the Nars Velvet Matte Skin Tint, after reading good reviews online. I picked this up over the summer, which feels like it was ages ago, and have been testing it out.
In the Velvet Matte Skin Tint range there are 12 shades, I have the second lightest shade in Finland. Whilst it doesn’t exactly match my skin tone, it’s slightly orange, once blended out it’s not too noticeable. For £30 there’s 50ml of product and contains SPF 30. The packaging is sleek in just black, so is a little boring considering it’s a high end brand. I have also found that as it’s a matte black tube, it’s very easy to get finger prints all over the tube making it look a little messy! But nothing that can’t be cleaned up!
It’s described on SpaceNK.com as:
Introducing Velvet Matte Skin Tint SPF 30. Instant gratification. Effortless application. Protects and perfects with a soft-matte finish. Oil-free. All-day wear. 12 global shades.
The Innovation:
- Velvet Illusion Complex – transforms the look of skin immediately and over time.
Key Benefits:
- Soft-Focus Effect – transparent Blurring Powders instantly enhance the look of skin by helping to diffuse imperfections with a powerful optical effect.
- Soft-Touch Feel – the powders’ unique, spherical shape compresses like a cushion, delivering a velvety-smooth, touchable feel and superior comfort on application.
Long-term Benefits:
- Refined pores and shine control – Rose Fruit Extract visibly minimises the appearance of pores, while controlling shine.
- Antioxidant Defence – Vitamins C, E, and SPF 30 protect against free-radical damage caused by environmental stress.
I have a love hate relationship with this foundation. It’s a matte finish, which I’m not always a fan of. I think for the winter it’s fine to wear as my naturally combination skin won’t make it look dewy as it would in warmer weather. But I have to be in the mood to want matte skin. I also find with the colder weather it sticks to any dry patches.
I do however really like the texture of this foundation, it definitely is a soft-matte finish and feels nice on the skin. It is also medium coverage which I like as I don’t need to layer certain areas of my face where it’s naturally more red, and if I do need to layer it it doesn’t look cakey. I can’t comment on the long-term benefits this foundation claims as I don’t wear it often enough.

My skin looks a little red around my upper lip where I had a lot of texture, I also wiped above my cupids bow to redo it with lipstick & forgot to cover above the lips with foundation again!
I also find that it doesn’t break out my skin. As it contains SPF, which isn’t something I typically look for in a foundation but it’s a nice bonus especially for the warmer weather and it doesn’t give flash back in photos.
Overall this is an okay foundation, whilst I like the texture and the formula, I have to be in a certain mood for a matte finish. Which isn’t enough to repurchase it. This was my first and last product from Nars as when I bought this, literally a month later Nars decided to sell their products in China. Not only for the fact that the brand is no longer cruelty free but also because I have other foundations I prefer to use over this one.
Thank you for reading! What are your favourite drugstore/highend foundation to use? Until next time!

Thanks for sharing dear. I was going to try it. I love natural soft matte finish in my foundation. I’ll see if it’s something I can work with.

It looks really great on the pictures! But I am also disappointed at the decision to sell in China. Before that Nars was a fab cruelty free choice xxx
